A system consists of more than one distinct components and it has a defined boundary.
Beyond the properties above there are none that define a system in general. Many definition exist which pertain to specific systems only.
The boundary may be defined in information theoretic terms: A boundary exists where the mutual information of objects within the boundary is greater than the mutual information between objects inside and objects outside the boundary. The objects enclosed by the boundary can be defined to be a subsystem.
